Engagement Session in Dallas County, Alabama

Posted in: Engagements/Couples

I love how a familiar location can still feel completely new and McKinley’s family cabin is the perfect example. I’ve photographed her cousin’s engagement session and wedding here, but each visit brings a different story, different light, and a different season to capture. Even though we were expecting crisp November air, Alabama had other plans. Instead of a cozy fall breeze, we got a warm, borderline-summer afternoon. By the end, all three of us were laughing about how we were sweating through what was supposed to be a “cool weather session.”

We started along the winding road near the cabin, where the fall colors were truly showing off. Alabama may not give us a long fall, but when she decides to deliver, she commits. The trees were full of bright yellows and every turn looked like a postcard. McKinley and Wheeler slipped into posing so naturally—comfortable, relaxed, and fully themselves. I love when a couple can forget I’m holding a camera for a moment and just enjoy being together and they did exactly that.

Next, we made our way to the creek, which is one of my favorite spots on the property. It has this peaceful, tucked-away feeling that photographs beautifully every single time. The way the light filtered through the trees made the whole scene feel a little magical. I found a fallen log that worked perfectly for a few sweet, intimate portraits. This is the kind of place that invites you to slow down and McKinley and Wheeler leaned right into that rhythm.

Before finishing up, we stopped on the cabin steps for a few last portraits—simple, cozy, and perfectly fitting for this location that already means so much to their family. And because no engagement session is complete without a ring shot, McKinley even helped me with that part. I had a completely different idea in mind involving a leaf in the air, but the ring absolutely refused to balance. After some very patient attempts, we shifted gears and created the shot on the ground instead. Honestly, I love how it turned out!

McKinley and Wheeler, thank you so much for choosing me to capture this season of your lives. I’ve loved every moment of working with you two and I can’t wait to photograph your wedding very soon!
